21 Steps for MATUL Course Writers
There are now three MATUL resource web sites:
- http://urbanleaders.org/ma for structural design issues for the program
- http://urbanleaders.org/matul for content that might be useful for courses, most of it having come from grassroots training processes. this site has sixteen subsites, one for each course
- http://www.matul.org for public viewing of the partnership.
I update these almost daily, so as you have materials available email them, and I can add them in as appropriate.
The attached is a list of steps set out to help you simplify the course writing progressions.
- Look at the program goals and outcomes and philosophy on the website.
- Look at your particular course on the course chart and review its goals.
- Look at the MATUL site for the subsite with resources related to your particular course http://urbanleaders.org/matul
- Start with the action activities of the course then draft an initial list of 30 interactive sessions/lectures to enable reflectioin on the action.
- Open the simple course template then the more detailed course outline format page and start with the heading and course title and description from the Common Understandings then fill in the other sections.
- Interact with other course writers from the other schools on this. The list is on The Common Understandings. It is good to keep referring back to as the collective proposal.
- Look at similar courses on the web and revise this, recognising that there are no/few courses for urban poor churchplanters and NGO workers
- Go through the book list http://urbanleaders.org/MATUL/Readings/Appendix6.htm and make your own book list in APA format (American Psychological Association – this is the standard format for missiology, you can find their regulations on the web), make sure your library has these (This step needs to be discussed with your director, probably four months ahead of course delivery).
- Send your program director and the MATUL coordinator (Viv) a copy of work so far.
- Do initial design of 12-15 learning activities, one per week (Review Corrie's material on action based learning and Rich examples), evaluating how these can best be implemented.
- Do initial design of 1 day report back at the end of the course
- Write the learning outcomes, the way of measuring them and their weighting
- Send your program director and the MATUL coordinator (viv) a copy of work so far
- Integration with Program Goals:
- Review each topic and ask the question how does this move a churchplanter towards being a movement leader and holism, an NGO leader towards holistic evangelism and movement level NGO work.
- Review each topic and ask how it relates to the Kingdom of God and what Biblical concepts it builds from.
- Review each topic in the light of the overall goals of the program and consider women's perspectives.- Send your program director and the MATUL coordinator (Viv) a copy of your work thus far.
- Redesign 40 hourscontent faciltation, now with assignments and readings integrated for each topic.
- Redesign learning activities with assignments and readings for each topic
- Send completed course outline to your program director for review and to the MATUL Coordinator
- Now the Course Outline is done, go onto the main task - Develop the lectures, learning activities in detail.
- Course Manual: Integrate one page of notes for each topic plus diagrams plus forms into a word based study guide, beginning with cover page, and course outline.
